“All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered; the point is to discover them.” Galileo Galilei
So, what is the truth about Bigfoot?
In October 1967, two men were searching for Bigfoot in northern California when they made an amazing discovery. Using a rented 16mm movie camera, Roger Patterson captured 954 frames of an unknown creature briskly walking bipedally away from them at an oblique angle. The legend of "Patty" was born.
Roger Patterson's and Bob Gimlin's film has become the most contested, and solid, piece of "evidence" supporting the potential existence of Bigfoot. In the 59 years since the film was taken, the film has been dissected, digitized, reproduced, enhanced, stabilized, and studied by thousands of amateur and professional sleuths determined to discover the truth about Bigfoot. To date, no-one has been able to prove the film was faked. However, no-one has been able to prove that the subject in the film was a living, unknown creature either.
What is known is that "something" walked in front of that camera in October 1967. Of this, there is no doubt. So, exactly what was it that they filmed that day?
The biomechanics of the creature and measurements taken at the filming location indicated that it was a very large animal of non-human body proportions with a walking gait that was significantly non-human. It walked with a stooped-forward torso with bent-legs and a very long stride distance between steps. With each step, the sole of the foot swung to an almost vertical position, all while the creature walked over rough terrain smoothly, without stumbling or watching where it was stepping.
As a career mechanical engineer, I can say with certainty that building an animatronic model of such a creature is not possible today. The best humanoid robots ever fabricated are not capable of such a graceful gait. If someone were to convincingly create a hoax today, they most assuredly would use AI generated images.
It is widely understood that the technology to fake this creature so convincingly did not exist in 1967. Neither the pelage nor the underlying body structure seen in the film could have been fabricated at the time. "Ape-man" costumes used in the movie industry at that time were quite comical and it was easy to see that they were obviously a "man in a monkey suit".
If the technology to create a convincing suit did not exist in 1967, then the film cannot be a hoax. If the film is not a hoax, then the creature must be real. Hmm.
If Bigfoot does not exist as a biological creature, then what is it that everyone has been seeing, hearing, and smelling over the past several hundred to thousands of years? Something is leaving tracks all across the globe, often times in very rugged and remote locations. All that is required is for ONE of these pieces of perceived evidence to be genuine to prove that Bigfoots exist. The challenge is in how to make that determination.
At the end of my book "Bigfoot is Real" (available below), I stated that I really do not KNOW any more now about the reality of Bigfoot than I did when my interest was first kindled in 1969 after reading a Reader's Digest article titled: "Is there an American Abominable Snowman?" My lack of answers motivates me to continue striving to learn more about the phenomena. Should Bigfoot be real or not, I would like to know.
